Obituary
It is with great sadness that webmaster reports the death of our friend and beloved former pastor to many, Rev. Jim Griffin.  The following obituary was written by his loving granddaughter Laura Ann Griffin and great friend Bebe Gauntt and was published in the Mobile Press Register on Sunday November 2, 2008.  Please note that the interment service will be at Pine Rest Cemetery in Foley at 10:00 AM on Monday 3 November 2008 with a Celebration of Life Service at 11:15 AM at St. Andrew By The Sea

"Reverend James A Griffin, Jr., beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather, genuine friend and pastor to all he encountered, peacefully winged his way to heaven Friday, 31 October 2008.  He was born 31 December 1922 in Hamden Ridge, Alabama and graduated from Castleberry High School, the University of Alabama, and Emory University Candler School of Theology.  Rev. Griffin, a veteran of WWII was a member of the Greatest Generation.  He loved his God, his family and his country.  After serving as a B-24 Gunnery Officer, 494th Bomb Group, Army Air Corps in the South Pacific, he earned his wings as a private pilot.  He was the unofficial goodwill ambassador at Jack Edwards Airport in Gulf Shores and spent many happy hours in the company of those who shared his -passion of flying.  Rev. Griffin was a Methodist minister in the Alabama-West Florida Conference fro more than 40 years (Wilmer-Tanner Williams United Methodist Church (UMC) Citronelle UMC, Graceville UMC, Forest Hill UMC, Atmore UMC, Marlow-Gulf Shores UMC) retiring from Gulf Shores UMC.  In recent years, Rev. Griffin was affiliated with Spanish Fort UMC and was an associate member of St. Andrew By The Sea in Gulf Shores.  Rev Griffin is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Dottie, son James A. III (Skip), of Miami, daughter Melanie Moore and husband Bob of Fairhope, many grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and countless treasured friends.  Rev Griffin considered himself a universal pastor and the reaction of people of all faiths and races touched by his love and concern proved this to be true.  Following internment at 10:00 a.m. Monday, 3 November at Pine Rest Cemetery in Foley there will be a celebration of his life at St. Andrew By The Sea 17263 State Highway 180 (Fort Morgan Road), Gulf Shores.  Rev. Robert Warren and Dr. Thomas Lane Butts officiating.  A reception will follow in the St. Andrew Fellowship Hall.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the United Methodist Church Children's Home or the Westminster Foundation."

Warren in June 2008.  All of these fine folks have been worshiping with us, some for a long time, and have just made formal that which was already in practice.  Please welcome them if you were unable to do so following worship on May 4th.  Click the small photos below to view larger versions of each picture.

Congregational Meeting
The Congregational Meeting of April 20, 2008 following the morning worship service was a beneficial and informative session, detailing the progress we have made in past several years in regards to ministry and programs, facilities and finances.  As with any growing and dynamic organization, more remains to be done and in order to do that we are all being asked to contribute more, not only in finances but in seeking new members, joining in the programs and ministries being offered, and in our support of others in the congregation.  When you receive your mid-year stewardship campaign mailing, please prayerfully consider what you can do to further the ministries of St. Andrew By The Sea as we prepare to begin new ministries with the arrival of our Youth Minister in June.  On a historic note, this was the first Congregational Meeting held in the Fellowship Hall, which lends itself to the type of presentation so ably given by Bubba Lee, our Board of Directors President.  To view three photos of the meeting click on the small photos below.  Once the larger photos are on your monitor, some of you may be able to enlarge them further by clicking on them again.

Museum Trip
A couple of weeks ago some of the Saint Andrew Men made an excursion to The National WW II Museum, formerly known as the D-Day Museum.  It is located in New Orleans, LA and based on their accounts, it is a trip and visit worth making.  Paul Barfield took some photos of the trip and sent them to the web master, and you may share a portion of what they saw by clicking on the small photo below.

Bar-B-Que
Sunday April 6, 2008 following the worship service, Hal Callaway, assisted by Paul Alanko served up his famous pulled pork and chicken BBQ with his own special sauce.  Iris Reddy provided her delicious cakes for dessert and everyone else brought their favorite dishes consisting of salad, slaw, potato salad, beans, peas, corn, congealed salad, deviled eggs, and tasty morsels of every kind.  Beverages were provided by the Fellowship Committee which was ably assisted by some volunteers who helped in the kitchen before and after.  The decorations were splendidly done by Susanna Lax and Sissy Bailey.  It was a fine event not only for the food, but for the fellowship and fun as there was lots of visiting done before, during and after the meal.  Enjoy the photos taken of the events of the day by clicking the small photo below.

Zimmerman 50th Anniversary
Jan and Howard Zimmerman renewed their wedding vows during the worship service on Sunday April 06, 2008.  In attendance with the congregation were many of the Zimmerman family.  Congratulations Howard and Jan and thanks for allowing us to celebrate with you and to share your joy.  Three larger photos may be viewed by clicking the three smaller ones shown below.

Person of the Week
We frequently pray for our service men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq and they are never far from our thoughts.  Recently ABC News paid tribute to a fellow by the name of Bert Brady and some of his friends who greet those service members returning from the conflicts overseas and who land in Dallas, Texas.  The story is brief and worth watching.  Click the small icon below to view the short video.

Christian Service Center
April is one of two months during the year during which St. Andrew By The Sea provides food to the food pantry at the Christian Service Center.  You may pick up a brown bag, or several, in the Narthex on March 31, 2008, and fill them, or you may simply make a check out to the Christian Service Center and in the For line write "For Food Pantry - St Andrew By The Sea"  If you do this the Center will be able to purchase food from the Bay Area Food Bank in Theodore, AL for pennies on the dollar.  Of course you do not have to use the brown bags the church provides, but the list attached will give you some idea of the current food needs of the food pantry at the Center.  These are the food needs at the moment:
Dry Beans     Boxed Cereal    Gravy    Catsup
Canned Beans (Black, Kidney, Navy, etc.)
Green Peas  Green Beans    Powdered Milk
Pancake Mix   Cake Mix    Pork and Beans
Tuna Fish    Chili with beans    Jelly    Syrup

Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, was a beautiful day, and those at worship at St. Andrew By The Sea experienced a worship service filled with great music by the Branyon Ringers and the Chancel Choir under the direction of our Choral  Director, Dr. Roger Jones, and Joan Hand our organist and Music Director.  Additionally there was a wonderful sermon on "Speaking Easter" by our pastor Rev. Robert Warren.  If you missed it, perhaps you can get a tape.  The ushers were busy trying to seat the over 600 worshipers, and somehow managed to make everyone comfortable.  Click the small photo below to view some of the photos that portray some of  the moments of the day.  The slide show begins with the choir rehearsing, and ends with members lingering to enjoy each others company and to thank our pastors for a memorable day of worship.

Griffin Reception
A reception honoring Rev. Jim and Dottie Griffin was held following the worship service on Sunday March 9, 2008 in the fellowship hall of St. Andrew By The Sea.  In addition to Jim and Dottie, and their daughter Melanie Moore and here husband Bob, there were dozens of well wishers as these two wonderful people take their leave from our church and community and move to Westminister Village in Spanish Fort.  It was a wonderful event, full of happiness and joy in seeing old friends again as well as sadness in the departure of two people who have contributed so much to Gulf Shores and the island.  We will miss their presence in our midst, but their spirit and friendship remains.  Food and decorations for the event were provided by ladies of the church.  Photos of the event may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

Barber Shop Chorus
The Saint Andrew Men presented The Four Winds Barbershop Chorale in the Sanctuary Monday 15 January 2007 at 7:00 PM. Spaghetti Supper
Monday, January 21 is the date that has been set for the Christian Service Center Spaghetti Supper and fund raiser.  The Christian Service Center meets the emergency aid needs of those who are needy on the island, and last year aided over 1850 families with assistance on rent, utilities, medical bills, and transportation needs.  Over 55,000 individual meals were provided in the form of a weekly food gift.  In order for this work to continue, money is needed to defray the costs of these services, and this the fund raiser that provides you the opportunity to assist monetarily while enjoying an evening of fun and fellowship along with the great food.  The Supper will be held at the Gulf Shores Adult Activity Center from 5-7 PM.
