Christmas Musical
The congregation and members of the community were treated to a wonderful program of music for the Christmas Holidays as the combined bell and chancel choir presented their annual Christmas Program.  It was wonderful program, superbly directed and performed.  Our thanks to the choir and bell choir for the hundreds of hours of practice required to prepare for the program and for the effort to put the program on.  Thanks as well to the worship committee for readying the church for the advent season .  Your efforts were magnificently displayed for the hundreds of people who attended the service. Thanks too, to those ladies of the congregation who prepared for and hosted the reception following in the fellowship hall. Click the small photo below to view a larger photo taken following the service of the choir.  If you click the larger photo twice you will be treated to an even larger version on some browsers.

Thanksgiving Celebration
While Thanksgiving will not be observed officially until November 22, 2007, the congregation got a jump on the celebration by having our annual Thanksgiving meal on Sunday November 11, 2007 in our new fellowship hall.  It was a happy occasion and the house was packed.  Well done to the Fellowship Committee and all those who were responsible for the setup and cleanup for the event.  Thanks, too, to all the folks who cooked and brought the turkey, ham and other culinary delights that made the evening so special.  We have much to be thankful for as a congregation and it was appropriate that we celebrate that before members travel to be with family during the Thanksgiving holidays.  A few photos of the event may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

Veteran's Day
Veteran's Day was celebrated by St. Andrew By The Sea on Sunday, November 11, 2007 in a service or remembrance and respect.  We are grateful for all of our veterans and especially those who are members of the congregation.  Following the service, the veteran's in attendance gathered in front of the church for a photo and if you click the small photo below, you will be able to view a much larger version of the photo taken after church.  Thank you veterans for all you have done for us, and all which you continue to do. On some browsers, you may click that photo and get an even larger one.

The congregation was pleased to welcome Bill and Susan Coyne as our newest members on Sunday, November 11, 2007.  They are recent graduates of WASA and have chosen to join the congregation and continue their spiritual journeys with us.  We are delighted to have them as new members and look forward to knowing them better.  Please greet them and introduce yourself,  if you were unable to do so after church on Sunday.

Trunk or Treat
Our second annual Trunk or Treat will take place Sunday October 28th from 5-7 pm.  We will have fun, snacks, and games for all ages!  If you aren't familiar with a Trunk or Treat, it is where children go through the parking lot and collect treats from car trunks that can be decorated  as you like.  It is a great, safe way for children to enjoy Halloween.  If you would like to help in any way or have any questions, please contact Meredith Egbert.

Pumpkin Patch
The St. Andrew By The Sea Pumpkin Patch was held on October 20, 2007 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and on October 21 20074 after worship. Thanks to all who helped with the unloading and arranging of the pumpkins, squash and corn, to those who made cookies and refreshments and especially all of those who purchased the pumpkins and other items.  The event was being sponsored by the Xplorer's Group and after the final sale on Sunday, the remaining pumpkins were given to the Christian Service Center for distribution as they saw fit.  Thanks Xplorer's for a great event.  Some Photos may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

Birthday Party 2007
We celebrated our 9th Birthday in our very own fellowship hall on Sunday September 17, 2007.  It was a gala occasion with food, fun, fellowship and some spirited singing by our youth.  Thank you Fellowship committee for planning and setting up for the event and thanks as well to all of the cooks who contributed to the lavish outlay of food.  Everyone who attended had a great time - with many more to come in a building that is being used to bring us closer together as a congregation.  If you missed the celebration, click the small photo below to view a slide show of some of the events of the evening.

Fund Raiser for Kathy Van Cor
A Mama Mia Spaghetti Supper benefiting Kathy Van Cor was held on Friday evening September 7, 2007 in the fellowship hall from 5:-7:30 PM.  The meal which consisted of Spaghetti, Salad, Bread, Beverage, and Dessert was wonderful.. For those who may not have heard, Kathy was injured in a car accident in July and is the wife of Fred Van Cor, a Fire medic with the Gulf Shores Fire Department.  Both are members of St. Andrew By The Sea.  The public is was invited to participate in this fund raiser and they did so in big numbers.  The event was sponsored by St. Andrew By The Sea and the Gulf Shores Fire Department

Big Day
Sunday August 26, 2007 was a special day in the life of the congregation of St. Andrew By The Sea.  Rev. Robert Warren was the preacher for the day and during the course of the worship service he not only delivered the sermon but baptized Maggie Elizabeth Mattison, daughter of Greg and Mary Mattison, and welcomed four new members into the congregation - Dottie Griffin, George Sanders, and Laura and Pierre Geneux.  Gene Burnette, Chairman of the Board of Directors announced from the pulpit that the Pulpit Committee was presenting to the congregation Rev. Robert Warren as a candidate for Senior Pastor and that the voting on the nomination would take place on Sunday September 9, 2007 at a called congregational meeting following worship on that day.  Following the worship service, a celebration of thanks was held in the fellowship hall decorated for the occasion by Susanna Lax and Boots Bass, during which over 200 members and guests were treated to a wonderful luncheon by the Saint Andrew Women and those who brought covered dishes for the wonderful buffet.  It was a great day and a wonderful and joyous occasion.  Photos of all the events of the day may be viewed by clicking the small photos below. Thanks to Jim Roy for photos for the second slide show available by clicking the small pie.

Nelms
It is with great sadness that we all learned of the death of two of this congregation's staunchest members, Dr. Joe Nelms and his wife Diane Nelms.  Joe passed away Sunday July 29, 2007 and Diane followed on Monday July 30, 2007.  At present a joint service is planned for Wednesday August 1, 2007 at the church.  The family will be available for visitation at 1:00 PM at the church and the service will follow at 2:00 PM..  Please keep the family in your prayers, especially Jessica and Chris Robinson, their grandchildren, whom they loved and cherished and nourished throughout the life of this congregation.

Baptism
Jamie and Dyroma Burroughs presented their infant daughter, Anna Hampton Burroughs, for baptism on Sunday July 29, 2007.  It was a joyous occasion, made more so by the presence of her extended family and by the sharing of the occasion with the congregation.  We are charged to care for Anna's spiritual development and I am sure that when we have the opportunity we will do just that.

Last Sunday as Pastor
Sunday July 29, 2007 was the final worship service that Rev. Robert Warren will lead us in worship as Pastor.  We will have the joy of hearing him preach again in the future, but in a capacity of visiting minister as he moves on to serve God in other endeavors in his life.  We will miss him and the spiritual uplifting he brought us, not only with his sermons, but with his love, compassion, presence during times of crisis and joy, and friendship.  God speed Robert.  A few photos  for all of us to take with us on our journey are included below.  Click any photo for a larger version.

New Facility in Use
The Board of Directors met as a group in the new wing of the church on Thursday July 12, 2007 for the first time.  Volunteers worked throughout the day on Thursday to prepare the facility for use by the Vacation Bible School students for the remainder of this week, and for the congregation to use as Sunday School rooms and for fellowship on Sunday July 15, 2007.  A photo of the Board of Directors meeting is available by clicking the small photo on the left below, and the use of a classroom by one of the Vacation Bible School classes may be viewed by clicking the small photo on the right below.  The third small photo will take you to a slide show of photos taken on Sunday July 15, 2007 in the new facility and during the worship service.  Enjoy.  Thanks to all of the volunteers who are working and continuing to work to move from the old modulars to the new wing.

W. and Amy for allowing us to share your joy on this happy occasion.  Additional photos are included in the photos for the events of Sunday July 15, 2007 shown in the slide show above.  Click on the small photo on the right.

Retirement
On Sunday July 8 2007, Rev. Robert Warren announced his retirement as pastor of St. Andrew By The Sea.  After 36 years in ministry, nine of them as the founding pastor of St. Andrew By The Sea, Robert has decided to serve God in another venue while continuing to be a part of our community.  We will sorely miss his leadership.  His sermons were brilliant, his life inspiring and his love for us unending.  No one could have asked more from a pastor.  No one could have been more loved by a congregation.  He has inspired us to grow spiritually as individuals and a congregation.  A look at our campus on Fort Morgan road and the completion of our new Fellowship Hall attests to our growth, which is an effort to serve our congregation and the entire community better.  More impressive are the numbers of members of the congregation who daily work in support of the Christian Service Center, Habitat for Humanity, the Lighthouse, and other Outreach organizations. His challenge to us to be called to ministry will remain after he steps down....and we must continue to meet that challenge.  God speed Robert and Pat.  Click to view Retirement Letter

Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is in full swing and Meredith and David Egbert with their group of well organized teachers, coaches and assistants, as well as snack providers, got events underway on Monday evening at 5:30 pm.  Over 30 children and a few adults showed up for bible instruction and activities designed to make learning fun.  To view some of those participating, click the small photos below.  Our thanks to Jim Roy and Mary Lou Pope for the photos.  If you observe carefully, you will note the FIRST use of our new facility in some of the photos of the children having refreshment on day 2 of the school.  How appropriate.

Currently all 23 weeks of construction are shown.  We have a certificate of occupancy Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! and praise the Lord.

Baptism
What a joy to witness the Infant Baptism of Lauren Jeanette Walstad on Sunday July 1, 2007.  In the company of her mother and father, John and Lisa Walstad, and her extended family, she was baptized by Robert during the worship service.  It was a wonderful day for her family and her St. Andrew family as we began with her a spiritual journey which we hope brings happiness, peace and good health.

Dedication
A day long anticipated arrived on Sunday 17 June 2007 - Dedication Day for our new building, a combination of offices, Sunday school classrooms, kitchen, storage and fellowship hall.  It is 9,000 square feet of pure usefulness, a launching pad for what we hope to continue to do in our community - serve God and our fellow sojourners on our spiritual journey through this world. May all who enter the building feel compelled to do just that as we strive to achieve Robert's stated goal for this and every year - everyone called to ministry.  Of course no project of this magnitude is successful without a lot of hard work, and there were many hands and hearts involved in this project.  Here is a list of those who made this happen - us, for having the vision, the Board of Directors for guiding us toward that vision, the financial contributors from large to small, the Building Committee, David Vosloh our building superintendent, Harold Morgan, our Building Committee chair and volunteer coordinator, the Women of St. Andrew for their leadership and funding of the kitchen appliances and the chairs and tables for the fellowship hall as well as their feeding of work crews and working within those crews, the St. Andrew men for their volunteer work in completing the building, our architect, our design team, our contractors, and all those who prayed and labored in any way to insure the project's success.  Thank you all.  It is worth mentioning that Harold Morgan gave a wonderful synopsis of the project on Sunday during his remarks, and Martha Hosey made a wonderful presentation of the framed groundbreaking shovel and our charter to the congregation.  Now the charter can be displayed in the new building and the shovel can be removed from its case to be used for further expansions.  It is also worthy of note that Robert delivered the finest one sentence sermon ever delivered at St. Andrew before we left the worship service to complete the happy events of the day at a BBQ in the new fellowship hall.  Our thanks to Hal Callaway, May and Paul Alanko, and all the other members of the Fellowship Committee for the preparation of the food and the hall.  To all those who brought the food, created the table center pieces, served the beverages, hauled the trash, and made our day a delight, THANK YOU ALL.  Photos of the events of the day may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

Kitchen Shower
The St. Andrew's "Kitchen Shower" to help furnish the new kitchen and fellowship hall was a huge success and enjoyed by all who attended.  Lots of "stuff" for the new kitchen was brought to the shower and cash gifts totaling over $2000 were give to cover the costs of large items yet to be purchased for the fellowship hall.  Thanks to the St. Andrew Women who organized and made this wonderful event of fun, fellowship and sharing possible. The food was super and the fun was even better.  Photos of those who had the fun and who brought the food and gifts may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

SAM
The men of St. Andrew By The Sea met on Tuesday April 10 at the Island Pancake House in Gulf Shores and agreed to form a group which will meet once a month for the purpose of fellowship, outreach and spiritual enrichment. The group will be called simply, SAM, short for Saint Andrew Men. The group's first fundraising project will be to raise funds for the technology in the new fellowship hall.  Officers for the year 2007-2008 will be Tom Gauntt, President, Don Pope,  Treasurer, and Rod Chappelle, Secretary.  The next meeting will be an evening meeting on 8 May at 6:00 pm.  It will be held at Craft Farms if a meeting room can be arranged there.  Check the bulletin and newsletter for details later.  A photo of the group's officers taken at the conclusion are shown below.

Easter Worship
Easter Sunday morning dawned as a cold wet day with some hail or sleet gathered on peoples roofs and in some yards, but that did not deter the multitudes of the faithful from seeking a place to worship and to commemorate the resurrection of Christ.  The sanctuary at St. Andrew was full, almost to overflowing.  The service started with two songs by the Branyon Bells and concluded with the Hallelujah Chorus.  In between there was joy and worship and praise and laughter.  Rev. Warren baptized his grandson, Benjamin Alan Warren in the presence of his mother and father and extended family.  A huge number of children were in the congregation with their families and they joined Robert and George at the alter to celebrate Children's Moments, which for them on this day was a blessing and a candy treat.  All in all it was a wonderful day.  If you missed it, take heart.  There are a few photos of the occasion and these may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.  The web master apologizes for the blurring in some of the photos, but movement under the lighting conditions in which the photos were shot causes some moving objects to blur.

March News

Sunday March 25
The congregation of St. Andrew By The Sea welcomed two special guests at our Sunday morning worship service, Curt Williams, Executive Director of Youth Reach and Officer Billy Berry, Juvenile Division of Gulf Shores Police Department and Chairman of the Board of Youth-Reach.  Both spoke to the congregation about Youth-Reach Gulf Coast located in Summerdale, AL.  The ministry of these two men is most welcomed by the community and badly needed by young men in trouble.  We wish them continued success in their efforts to change the lives of those young men who receive the benefit of their ministry.  Three photos were taken during their visit and may be viewed by clicking the small photos below.

Sunday March 17
With Pastor Warren attending and officiating at the wedding of his son in Oregon on this day, the Rev. George Myers and Chaplin David McClain ably filled in for him, including the Rev. Myers conducting Children's moments.  It was a wonderful service, made even more so by the singing of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" by David Saunders, accompanied by the choir,  The web master now has dubbed this combination "David and the Goliaths" to give it a biblical ring.  The song was superb and merited a chorus of Amen's at its conclusion.  Thank you David and the choir.  A photo of those in attendance was taken just before the service started and may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

Handbell Choir
The Branyon Ringers opened the worship service on Sunday March 11, 2007 with a two piece prelude.  If you are interested in joining the handbell choir, please contact any of the members shown, or Joan Hand our director.  Bell Choir practices are on Wednesday evening from 5-6 p.m. and on Sunday morning before performances.  A photo showing the choir practicing early Sunday morning and during the prelude may be viewed by clicking the small photos below.

Men of St. Andrew
The organizational meeting of the "Men of St. Andrew" took place Tuesday, March 6th, 9:30 a.m. at the Island Pancake House in the Best Western Hotel on East Beach Blvd. in Gulf Shores.  After discussing several agenda items, the men decided to meet again Tuesday April 10, 2007 at the Best Western Island Pancake House at 9:30 a.m.  At that meeting we will discuss several important matters including when and where to meet on a regular basis, how we will be governed, what we will be called, and other important items.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the group, please plan to attend.  To view a photo of those who attended the first meeting click the small photo below.

Church on Sunday January 14
If you missed church on Sunday January 14 2007, you missed a lot, but the Children's moments was wonderful, as it always is.  Take a look at the two photo of their moments with Robert and George, and especially the bright shoes of the girls dressed for church.  There is also a photo of the choir, bringing us the music that always inspires us.

Congregational Meeting
The annual congregational meeting was held on Sunday January 21, 2007.  Officers were elected for the coming year, the treasurer's report for the past year was approved and a budget for 2007 was adopted.  Rev. Warren gave his report to the congregation and established goals for the year.  "Every member is called to ministry" was adopted as the church's theme for the year.  Please prayerfully consider what you will do to carry out your ministry for the year.  A slide show of the congregational meeting may be viewed by clicking the small photo below.

Groundbreaking January 21
Following the annual congregational meeting ground was broken on the site of our new church wing.  The members of the congregation who participated were treated to refreshments by the St. Andrew Women after the groundbreaking, and what a feast it was.  Thank you ladies for your kindness and the tasty treats.  A slide show of the groundbreaking is available by clicking the small photo below.

Remembering
As we begin the year 2007 let us pause and reflect on the sacrifices that young men an women in our armed forces are making on our behalf so we may continue to enjoy the freedoms our constitution grants to us.  If you would like to view information about the young soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice, click here and you will be taken to a page of the New York Times which displays information on each of the 3000 men and women on one page.  Read the directions on the page which will tell you how the information may be accessed.  Be patient, it takes some time for the page to load.
