In the very beginning many of those who were
led to help found St. Andrew By The Sea worshipped in several places. First there
was the Wedding Chapel in Gulf Shores, located on highway 59 just north of the bridge
which crosses the inter-coastal waterway.

The Wedding Chapel Gulf Shores
After some time at the Wedding Chapel, the venue changed by unspoken
consent to the Galilean Beach Service held at the Gulf State Park Beach near the beach
pavilion. These services are held each year from Memorial Day to Labor Day
under the auspices of the Foley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Elwell was the
Minister in Charge during the summer of 1998. Many of our present members attended
these services that summer until they came to an end following Labor Day. As the summer
wore on several couples joined each other for breakfast at the Gulf State Park where the
decision was made to seek a venue for winter and to try to organize a church.

Gulf State Park Beach
Our next place of worship turned out to be the South Baldwin Community
Theater, which still occupies a special place in the hearts of those who chartered the
church. Many Sundays this facility was filled, as we relied on guest ministers and
lay speakers to fill the pulpit until our search for a full time pastor was concluded.
It was in this facility that the church was born as our hearts came together in an
act of faith to proceed.

South Baldwin Community Theater
Planning began for raising money, finding a location and building a
temporary facility of our own to worship in until we could build permanent facilities.
Proposed architectural drawings of the permanent facilities are shown in the right
most column of this page. Wade and Pat Ward donated the land on which we placed our
temporary facilities and eventually built our sanctuary. Our first sanctuary on this
site is still on the site and is being used for meetings of various church affiliated
groups, including WASA classes, a Sunday morning coffee gathering, meeting of the Women
and Men of St. Andrew By The Sea, and others. |
